No more Filesonic, no more Fileserve

Filed in Other 40 comments

Hello everybody, it’s been a long time…

I have some unfortunate news for you all. Fileserve disabled our account and Filesonic just disabled all download functionality. In addition to that, ul.to blocks all incoming traffic from the US, so all that is left for now, is uploading.com.

For now there will be no more new uploads (have been very few the last weeks anyhow), untill things have quieted down and we can decide on how things will go in the future. For now that is it.

I am sorry for everybody who bought a filesonic/fileserve/ul.to account via our website and can’t use it anymore, but there is nothing I can do about it.

All I can say is that I am sorry, and kind of devastated, because I have no idea at all what will become of abook. I’ve run this site for a bit more than 2 years now and it would be very sad to shut it down like this. If you have any ideas on how to keep it alive, please feel free to post it in the comments.

Sincerly

buck

Let me add this: If you sent me an email via the contact form and did not receive a reply in this matter, that is because your provider blocks mails from us.

Keep up the good work regardless, really enjoy the site. Hopefully, once the initial shock and paranoia have worn off things will return to a semblance of normalcy. The opening salvos of the cyber wars have begun, it may be a little while…

Torrents maybe? I really hope that because of those MONKEYS (Filesever and Filesonic) this site don’t close. It has been awesome for me (I have dixlesia and no mobey to be an Audiobook .) keep it going.

If this is because of the pipa and fifa bills they have both been denied and are not being put into action as a result of internet user outrage.

If you’re using firefox you should be able to get a non US IP by using an add on like Stealthy or Anonymox … it works for me when I want to watch a youtube video that is blocked in my country.

Also, keep up the great work. I’m sure there will be new sites soon. It’s not the first time something like this happened.

well, its actually is first time this happened on such “grand scale” … issue is not that some individual filehost got sued by somebody and becouse of it was forced to shutdown. Issue is that all this is due to megaupload got shutdown via USA GOV, it has never happened before like this… There is quite panic in all “warez fronts”, so to say… Basicly all filehosts is freaked out right now.

This is the begining of the end…it’s all about the money owners who finance the polititians and lawmakers.
There is this server I have account in…they’re still on the air.

Hi Buck

I am so very sad to hear this.
I sure hope that you are able to get something worked out with another server.
These books have been the most wonderful thing to have come accross for me.
I love your site and look egerly every day to see if there is anything new to pique my interest.
I am sorry that I have no suggestions for a better option as I am not very familier with this sort of thing but I do wish you the best in finding an other option.

hugs
Judy

just a thought, you could always post to usenet (newsgroups) and just use this sight to tell people when you ” discover ” books on the various news groups. i for one will miss this sight if it disappears. Oh and for the record i am also a loyal Audible subscriber

So sad to hear about this, I was always looking forward to your new posts. This site is a godsend for those of us who don’t always have the funds to purchase audiobooks. I will keep praying that some other alternative will come to pass.

It’s a fear thing. But the bills died, and I think the Megaupload bit was more ‘for show’ to see about a rxn like this. Look at the poster child they picked…Kim Dotcom couldn’t represent as a nicer person….er…hmmm. There’s a reason, he, specifically, was targeted.

There are still download services available. We just have to find one that works for abook.ws. Bottom line, until they decide to shut down libraries for ‘sharing’, and people decide that too is acceptable, they’re not going to win this.

Rapidshare isn’t ideal, but it looks like ‘the other’ audiobook download website has switched to using it.

The other piece, gentlemen, that I think people forget…since I believe most people here just use this site for personal use….your library has all sorts of media available for download, up to 10 items at a time usually, right to your computer from your own home. It’s funny, they put ‘checkout’ and ‘wait list’ restrictions on some of these things, I’m guessing they have user # restrictions or something so they treat them like books…but this stuff is still available for free. With a valid library card.

Hey, buck,
What about getting in touch with the guys running http://www.hoerbuch.to ?? Its a big German site I use a lot. They are looking for some clever programmers anyway at this moment, And they could surely use some sprucing up for their site…

However, what probably keeps them alive is, that you have to register to gain access to the download-area AND you have use a so called “thank you”-button to unveil the download-links.
I do not understand truly how these things work, but I could imagine, that it throws some of the dogs off your scent.

They also have a foreign audiobooks section. What about moving there for a while? Maybe they know a way to use European upload servers instead of American?

Good luck and this site !
Contact me, if you need help with German : )

Mediafire, 4shared, Wupload
Also check out filetram.com. Search anything and then on the left side a list of various services will come up. I don’t know how many are still going after this past week’s events but I can confirm the 3 I mentioned as still up and running.

Hey Buck,

A member posted this on a forum that I know you are a member of.
It might also explain some of what has been going on.
This isn’t over yet.
If you look at my first link you will see that there is a possibility that at least this agreement might be thrown out in the U.S. if it is found to me unconstitutional.

http://infojustice.org/archives/7031

Quote:
On Thursday, the European Union and 22 of its member states signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA — a major step toward enforcement of the copyright treaty. Eight countries, including the United States, had signed the agreement this past fall.

ACTA has always been controversial because the international negotiations that began in 2007 took place in secret. But now, opponents of the treaty have developed new muscle after witnessing the success of the Internet outcry against the two U.S. bills, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protest IP Act (PIPA).

In Poland, hundreds took to the streets this week to protest the government’s intention to sign ACTA. Several popular Polish websites replaced their regular content with statements expressing concerns about ACTA, and government websites were taken offline in an apparent denial-of-service attack coordinated by the hacker group Anonymous.

Hi!

I just wanted to say thanks for all the hard work and effort in compiling and uploading all these wonderful audiobooks. I’d've gone bonkers without them. And through you I’ve found some wonderful new stories to listen to as well.

I’ll echo the others here and hope also that this will blow away, and everything will be back to normal again soon, but in any case, I’ll wish you all the best, and I’d love to see you continue with abook…

Cheers!

When it was about a giveaway and you won, then I did reply to your mail. Plese check your spam/junk folder, it should be there somewhere.

The code you got should still be good.

As for other mails. I often do not reply, because mails get rejected very often and also I have not as much time as I had in the beginning of this site. I also do not reply when the question is already answered in the FAQ.
